The Beatles revolutionized music in that they were the first ‘band’ per se, to really have huge mainstream success. Before them, what was generally popular were solo artists, with a band who did not share the lime light, such as Elvis, or earlier than that, The Rat Pack singers such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. After The Beatles success, musicians began to perform in groups more frequently, rather than trying to ‘make it’ on their own
At the time the main thing was the music itself. Hard to imagine now but back then their singles sounded like nothing else you had ever heard, it was like seeing colour TV for the first time. These days you can only hear their music in the context of having already heard everything that followed it. Hearing a new Beatles single back in the day was the equivalent the iPad coming out.
In terms of musicality, they were also the first (major) rock and roll type band to more or less abandon the 12 bar blues chord progression. They still used it on some songs but it wasn’t the default approach.
